Trophic Melatonin helps increase total sleep time and sleep quality in people suffering from sleep restriction or altered sleep schedule e.g. shift work and jet lag. In the body, Melatonin has several important roles, including the regulation of our reproductive clock and sleep-wake cycles. The production of melatonin occurs predominantly at night, during darkness and alternates rhythmically between two phases: a 12-hour “on” phase and a 12-hour “off” phase. Darkness does not trigger the production of melatonin, light during night times, however, will suppress its synthesis. Insufficient exposure to light during the day may be linked to low levels of melatonin production at night. Any alteration of normal melatonin release from staying up late, jet lag, stress or even menopause may result in sleep disturbances. It has also been used in the treatment of cluster headaches, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and to decrease symptoms of tardive dyskinesia.
